The Ohio State University Choose Ohio First (COF) scholars Karierah Humphrey (IBE-Transfer), Olivia Maynard (EFC), and Brett Warner (IBE-Transfer) attended to the Ohio Statehouse on February 29, 2024 to be part of the COF 2024 Annual Showcase. This event is a celebration of the scholars and COF scholarship programs across Ohio. Scholars have an opportunity to display and discuss research, academic projects, and work-based learning experiences they have had during their time as a COF Scholar. The Showcase gives scholars recipients firsthand experience in conference-style presentations and allows them to network with General Assembly members, state officials, and business leaders (Ohio Department of Higher Education, 2024). The Ohio House of Science and Engineering (OHSE) is pleased to report that two of our COF scholars at Ohio State presented their work-based learning experiences during Showcase poster presentation session.
According to the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the 2024 COF Scholar Showcase was a resounding success, drawing attention and praise from the wider educational community. The event featured a diverse array of innovative research and projects from bright minds across the state, underscoring the significant impact of our state's investment in the future of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, (STEM). This achievement was highlighted in the Higher Ed Highlights, specifically in Episode 189, which celebrated Ohio's dedication to advancing STEM education. Karierah is third year Choose Ohio First (COF) Advancing an Inclusive Biotech Economy in Ohio (IBEO-Transfer) scholar majoring in Biology at The Ohio State University with an increased goal of working in healthcare. In the summer of 2023, Karierah began doing research at Cincinnati Children’s Health Medical Center (CCHMC) in the radiology department with Dr. Kim Cecil through University of Cincinnati’s (UC) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Neuroscience program. Her work focused on organizing, analyzing, processing, and interpreting data in files from January 2021- June 2023 that came from two specific MRI dedicated brain MR scanners. Olivia is a third year Excellence in Computing Fellowship (EFC) Choose Ohio First scholar at Ohio State University, with a Computer Science and Engineering major and Astronomy/Astrophysics minor. Her interests include the interdisciplinary nature of computer science when paired with other STEM fields, primarily its intersection with astrophysics. Her research centers around using high-performance computing to run orbital simulations of exoplanetary systems. The primary goal in these simulations is to test for evidence of planetary engulfment events. See Olivia's full biography.
