The COF CIR Chat Session on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 welcomed Joshua Sobecks for an engaging and insightful presentation titled In Vitro Characterization of Trypanosoma brucei Methionyl-tRNA Synthetases. The event was celebrated in Page Hall 0010 where Joshua Sobecks, a fourth-year undergraduate COF scholar pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry with a minor in Bioethics shared how his academic and research experiences at The Ohio State University have shaped his understanding of biochemical mechanisms underlying disease and therapeutic development.
His research incorporated steady-state enzyme kinetics and a wide range of molecular biology and biochemical techniques including PCR, in vitro transcription, protein purification, and aminoacylation assays. Through this work, Joshua developed a strong technical foundation while contributing to a deeper understanding of enzymatic function in a clinically relevant context.
Throughout the session, Joshua emphasized the value of sustained research involvement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and connecting fundamental biochemical research to translational applications. His journey illustrates how undergraduate research can build both technical expertise and clarity of purpose. Following graduation, Joshua plans to complete an MD/PhD degree with the long-term goal of becoming a physician-scientist advancing regenerative and translational therapies. Thank you to Joshua for sharing his inspiring pathway and for making this CIR Chat Session both informative and motivating for all who attended.
