SP26 CIR Chat Session #1 Highlights: Emma and Alex
The first CIR Chat Session of the SP26 semester had the opportunity to learn from Emma Clark (IBEO-Science) and Alex Nistor (EFC) who both shared their experiences with undergraduate research and professional growth at The Ohio State University. Emma and Alex highlighted how hands-on research opportunities have shaped their academic interests and future career goals, offering COF scholars an inside look at different pathways within STEMM fields.
Emma Clark, a fourth-year Evolution and Ecology major with a minor in Environmental Science, shared her journey in the Hamilton Lab, a behavioral ecology lab that studies fish group dynamics and environmental influences. Emma discussed how stepping into research, asking questions, and seeking mentorship helped her build valuable skills and solidified her interest in pursuing graduate school and a research-focused career. On the other hand, Alex Nistor, a third-year COF EFC scholar majoring in Computer Science and Engineering with a minor in Robotics and Autonomous Systems shared his experience as an undergraduate researcher in the Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Systems (AIMS) Lab at the Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence. Through this experience, Alex gained hands-on exposure to key automation concepts such as kinematics, behavior trees, camera calibration, and end effector design, and he is continuing to build on this work as part of his ongoing research at AIMS.
Emma and Alex emphasized the importance of stepping outside of one’s comfort zone, being open to new opportunities, and actively seeking mentorship. Their experiences provided COF scholars with valuable insights into how undergraduate research can open doors, build confidence, and prepare students for future careers. Thank you to Emma and Alex for sharing their journeys and helping make this an engaging and inspiring session!
