Increase in scholarships, need-based aid for students part of Governor DeWine’s budget announcement

COLUMBUS, Ohio (2019-03-15) — 

Ohio’s Chancellor of Higher Education today said Governor Mike DeWine’s state budget proposal for colleges and universities is student focused and a positive development for Ohio’s future.

“After 33 years in the General Assembly and 16 budgets, this may be the most student-focused state budget I’ve seen for higher education,” Chancellor Randy Gardner said. “This budget centers on affordability while helping prepare Ohio for a fast-changing economy and high-quality jobs through workforce preparation, more need-based financial aid, and strategic scholarships.” 

The budget highlights an increase of nearly $50 million in need-based financial aid for college students over the next two years and an additional $24 million in support for student scholarships in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical careers (STEMM).

The budget will be considered by the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate before Governor DeWine’s expected signature before July 1.
