Abshir Ali is a senior Choose Ohio First (COF) Excellence Fellowship in Computing scholar majoring in Computer Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University with interests in Software Engineering and Cybersecurity. Abshir was an intern at Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), which is a division of the American Chemical Society (and is located very close to Ohio State campus!) during the Summer of 2022, where he completed an internship in the Enterprise Information Security, focusing on Workstation Security Enhancement. Within this realm, he was critical in spearheading the key initiative of blocking USB mass storage device across the enterprise. His role involved using tools such as CrowdStrike Agent Falcon to obtain critical data about USB storage device detections and analyzing these data files using tools such as Python.
He was also involved in meetings with multiple departments across the enterprise to understand potential exemptions to the block, ensuring legitimate business needs were unaffected, while also coordinating with communications teams across the enterprise to ensure that all employees were aware of these initiatives and could plan accordingly. Abshir enjoyed working at CAS so much that he has continued working with the security team on a part time basis until the Summer of 2023, when he did an internship rotation with a software development team before returning to the security team in August to continue his important work.
Abshir Ali will present his internship experience in the CIR chat session on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 from 5:30pm-7:00pm in Smith Lab Room 1009 (SM1009).
