Title: Taking Flight at GE Aerospace
Lucas Kelly is a third-year Choose Ohio First (COF) Advancing and Inclusive Biotech Economy in Ohio (IBEO-Engineering) scholar majoring in Chemical Engineering at THE Ohio State University. He is particularly interested in the midstream oil and gas process. This past summer, he traveled back home to Cincinnati, Ohio to work for GE Aerospace as an Engineering, Materials, and Systems intern.
His experience involved assisting his team in solving composite material development and procurement problems. His largest project involved designing and testing a standard lab training for the team. He developed skills in composite testing and creation, analysis of data for material validity, and collaborating with suppliers to achieve desired results. Beyond the work related to his team, he also toured and learned about other teams and facilities within the Cincinnati area to enhance his knowledge of every level of an aircraft engine. This experience allowed Lucas to develop skills and knowledge of material science, supply chain principles, and large company operations as a Chemical Engineering student.
COF has provided me with numerous opportunities to expand my STEM experiences. I've taught students of many different ages, worked with the community, attended educational events. The Choose Ohio First Scholarship program has allowed me to explore my major and understand what I want to do beyond college. Being a founder of the COF student council has allowed me to gain leadership experience. The student council has also been a great way for me to meet other COF students to make this large school feel just a little bit smaller. Overall this program has provided me with so many opportunities that I am thankful for every day.
