Title: DNA and Medical Imaging: The Evolution of Small Rodents
Melvin Boontagarnon is a fourth year Choose Ohio First INSW-Science scholar majoring in Biology with an interest in biomedical and life sciences graduate school. He is particularly interested in the Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology program as well as the Biomedical Graduate School here at Ohio State. In January 2023, he joined a laboratory at Arnoff laboratory conducting evolution research into small rodents and has worked in that laboratory up to the present date.
His experience focused on a variety of tasks to aid the laboratory's research. From trapping mice, dissecting cadavers, conducting DNA tissue extraction, and utilizing medical imaging software to create 3D models. In particular, he was tasked with conducting troubleshooting and testing the medical imaging software for future students in the laboratory. This experience helped him develop critical skills in the field of life sciences research and develop knowledge on the industry.
Melvin will present his research experience on Thursday, February 17th, 2025 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. The presentation will be held at Smith Lab Room 1009 and will include and overview of all of his research activities over the past two years.
Choose Ohio First has greatly benefited my academic career through providing me advisors, access to resources, and new opportunities. Especially early on, I made great use of the COF tutoring services to help me overcome my difficulties in transitioning to college life. The program provided me with opportunities to connect with COF staff and fellow students that have enriched my college social life and support network. Finally, the program gave me many opportunities to explore my interests and career opportunities through COF sponsored events.
