Software Internship: Medical Devices in Telehealth
David Stuckey is a fourth-year Computer Science and Engineering student with a minor in Mathematics. He is a Choose Ohio First scholar in the Excellence Fellowship in Computing (EFC) scholarship group. David is pursuing a career in software engineering, with a focus on application development. This past summer, he completed a software development internship at Epic, an electronic health records company located in Verona, Wisconsin. At Epic, he worked with the Telehealth team to improve virtual care options for patients. The majority of his time was spent leading a project to implement live-streaming of medical devices directly within video calling software. Devices like stethoscopes and otoscopes are essential for diagnosis. Using these devices in clinic-to-clinic and school-based telehealth visits helps make healthcare more accessible to rural and underserved communities. The project challenged him to design a highly accessible UI and to experiment with audio/video processing and streaming algorithms. Based on direct feedback from healthcare providers and telehealth team members, he iterated on an initial design to create a final product that would be powerful and accessible for clinicians to use. This project improved his technical skills in UI development and streaming technologies, as well as his ability to design and collaborate towards an impactful software solution.

The information and skills there helped me to get two internships during my time at OSU. COF has also helped me to feel better connected with the OSU community and my fellow COF scholars. The program has also encouraged me to seek out opportunities to connect with other STEM groups, such as by mentoring high school robotics students."
