My Clinical Experience at Mount Carmel Hospital; Building Experience From The Ground Up
Corbin Helton is a third-year Choose Ohio First (COF) State and Regional STEM (STARS-Transfer) scholar pursuing a B.S. in biochemistry with the goal of applying to medical school. During his freshman year, Corbin studied engineering, but his desire to make a more immediate impact on people's lives pushed him toward medicine. In the summer of 2025, Corbin was hired as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) at Mount Carmel East Hospital, a hands-on clinical role that ranged from taking vitals, phlebotomy, and EKG/ECG, to the smaller things that make a real difference: helping patients bathe, walk, eat, or simply have someone to talk to. Along the way, Corbin had the privilege of connecting with patients from all walks of life and the chance to shape their healthcare experience, however small that impact might be. He set out to learn medicine from the ground up, and this experience delivered exactly that, affirming his passion for patient care and cementing his drive to become a doctor. Corbin is excited to share a few stories from his time as a PCT, what he learned along the way, and why he believes clinical experience is essential for anyone pursuing a career in medicine.
